Heavy Ion Escape From Martian Wake Enhanced by Magnetic Reconnection

چکیده
Mars is a dry planet with history of warm and wet environment. Hydrogen oxygen continuously escape from the unmagnetized planet. Although heavy ion rate in wake region low due to Mars' obstruction, there are reports events bursty enhanced escape. Here, we first find evidence Alfvenic dayside-produced plasma clouds accelerated by magnetic reconnection, which provides an explanation for mass observations Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. In event reported this study, two types flux ropes were successively observed reconnection exhaust Martian wake. One generated while others produced dayside boundary instability. The ions convected dayside, as well local original ions, can both be expelled tail reconnection. estimated quarter previous statistical result entire region.

Ion heating resulting from pickup in magnetic reconnection exhausts
[1] The heating of ions downstream of the x-line during magnetic reconnection is explored using full-particle simulations, test particle simulations, and analytic analysis. Large-scale particle simulations reveal that the ion temperature increases sharply across the boundary layer that separates the upstream plasma from the Alfvénic outflow. This boundary layer, however, does not take the form ...
متن کاملExperimental observation of correlated magnetic reconnection and Alfvénic ion jets
Correlations between magnetic reconnection and energetic ion flow events have been measured with merging force free spheromaks at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment. The reconnection layer is measured with a linear probe array and ion flow is directly measured with a retarding grid energy analyzer. Flow has been measured both in the plane of the reconnection layer and out of the plane. The mos...
متن کاملExperimental study of ion heating and acceleration during magnetic reconnection*
Ion heating and acceleration has been studied in the well-characterized reconnection layer of the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment @M. Yamada et al., Phys. Plasmas 4, 1936 ~1997!#. Ion temperature in the layer rises substantially during null-helicity reconnection in which reconnecting field lines are anti-parallel. The plasma outflow is sub-Alfvénic due to a downstream back pressure. An ion ene...
متن کاملMagnetic reconnection in weakly collisional highly magnetized electron-ion plasmas
A reduced three-field model of two-dimensional magnetic reconnection in a weakly collisional, highly magnetized plasma consisting of isothermal electrons and cold ions is derived from a set of Braginskii-like fluid equations. The model is then used to calculate the linear growth rate of the reconnecting instability in collisionless and semicollisional parameter regimes. © 2010 American Institut...
متن کاملIon diamagnetic effects in gyrofluid collisionless magnetic reconnection
Ion diamagnetic effects on collisionless magnetic reconnection are investigated by means of numerical simulations of a Hamiltonian gyrofluid model. The work is focused in particular on the effects of inhomogeneous density equilibria in the large ∆′ regime. The linear growth rates predicted by asymptotic theory are recovered. Nonlinearly the island shape is strongly modified and the flow changes...
